The History of California Wine

California has a long and rich history of winemaking. The wine industry marked its beginning in 1769, when the first vines were planted, San Diego at the Mission of the Franciscan missionary Father Junipero Serra. This black-skinned grape variety, the grape was called Mission, played a significant role in California wine to 1880.

In 1833, first documented imported European wine vines of California was theplanted in Los Angeles by a French winemaker Jean-Louis Vignes.
